Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Maintenance and restoration of a historic house in Arequipa
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
This house used to belong to the Marquis Blas de Quiroz, who lived in this luxurious mansion in 1794; due to his high status, he was well known for saying, "After God, only Quiroz" ("Después de Dios, solo Quiróz"). Some years later (1837) and because a part of the Chili River passed under this house, it was rented by the Peruvian government for use as 'Casa de la Moneda', or for the minting of coins; but they only worked here six years. For the next 100 years, the house passed into the hands of different owners, who changed it to suit their individual needs. In the year 2007, it was leased to Casa Andina, who began restoration work inside this real work of art; there are the murals, vaulted ceilings areas decorated with ornate gold leaves. The owners have restored the hotel in keep with its colonial influence as a way to preserve a piece of Arequipa's history and educate about its past.
