Though the sun shines brightly for most of the time, the average temperature in Arequipa is only about 20 ºC. The temperature can fall to 10 ºC at night, but the absence of dampness makes it seem warmer.
Humid areas in Arequipa
The humid areas are along the low forest towards the north of Urubamba and the eastern side of Cusco, the Araza Valley and the Pillcopata. The rainfall is heavier here and the climate is warm and moist. The area receives more than 1,000 mm of rainfall each year.
Dry Climate in Arequipa
With far less rain in the low yunga in the basin of the river Apurimac, the central and south-eastern part of the region has warm and dry weather. The annual rainfall recorded here is less than 500 mm.
Temperate (humid and dry)
The climate of the towns in the central valley of the Cusco area varies between humid and dry depending on the location of the town on the mountain slope. All towns close to the east of the mountain get more rain while the leeward side on the west is drier. The favourable climate of these temperate areas attracts a large section of the population.
Cold
The higher reaches of the mountains in the Cusco area are forbiddingly cold with the maximum temperature rarely climbing above 10 ºC while the minimum temperature falls well below 0 ºC.
