Semana Santa

29/03/2010 - 04/04/2010

Place of event: Arequipa City

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday "Domingo de Ramos". The procession begins at the Temple of Santa Catalina where it leaves the image of Jesus riding a donkey, representing the entry of Jesus into Galilee, followed by the faithful carrying palms woven into a cross that we call "Domingo de Ramos". This custom is widespread in the city and is very common to see these palm crosses in many homes in Arequipa, which represents God's blessing on the home.

Monday is the procession of the Señor de la Caridad, who visit several churches on their journey and many people give wreaths as a sign of devotion.

Tuesday is the procession of the Virgen de la Macarena, with hoods and large maroon cirios (candles).

Wednesday is the procession of the Señor de la Sentecia.

On Thursday, with the image of Jesus Christ, we will visit many churches in the historic center of Arequipa, which are decorated to greet him.

On Friday, the procession of the Santo Sepulcro will take place in the morning of the death of Jesus. On one side of the procession are the men and the other side are women. In Arequipa it is custom to eat the "Friday Soup" (dried fish, seaweed, shrimp, cau-cau, wheat, potatoes, eggs and pumpkin), it is forbidden to eat animal meat like chicken or beef. In the afternoon people prepare a mazamorras: dwelling "morada" (made of purple corn flour and flour, porridge "cochina" made of chancaca (sweet made from sugar cane) and cornstarch, and is accompanied with the traditional rice pudding.

On Saturday, the mass is performed by Gloria and Resurrection. At night they burn straw and paper dolls representing Judas the traitor. It is in Yanahuara where this represents best practice.

On Resurrection Sunday we have a custom to eat a 7-meat soup.
